Would you check out the disco ball cake @ this site? I can't get any details - what do you suppose they used for the "mirrors"?

I figure it's baked in pyrex bowls - how do you secure them together, icing?

Thanks!

You could bake it in pyrex bowls, there also is a ball pan from wilton, but bowls would would great. And yes you just ice them together like a layer cake.

As for the mirrors it's hard to tell what they did my first thought is that it is small square foil wrapped chocolates. Looking at the other cakes they all seem to be iced with a fondant, it is a shiny icing but I don't think it would be quite as shiny as that ball seems.
(If your not familiar with it a fondant icing is rolled out like pie dough and then you would have to cut all the squares. You would ice your cake with a buttercream and then stick the squares on)

Hope that helps

Thanks! I'll try using the bowls - I don't know if I'd get much more use from the ball pan...... in fact, Wilton makes a guitar pan (dd's b'day is a rock n' roll theme) but I hate to put out 10 bucks for a pan I won't use again.

I've never used fondant before - it actually scares me a little bit. LOL

I could ice it and use edible glitter if worse comes to worse.
I may do something completely different, who knows.

Thanks for the help!

Do you have places there that rent cake pans?

The fondant isn't that bad to use especially if you are cutting pieces and sticking them on. It's not my favourite thing for having to cover a whole cake with one smooth sheet! Although I don't use it much because it is a very sweet icing and you have to have another icing underneath for it to stick to the cake.

I think if you iced the whole thing and covered with edible glitter it would look good.
