My SIL has well water and they put a water softener in that helped alot. Her kids clothes were always "gray" before that.

I would try the water softener first, to see if that helps. Also, I really like BIZ as opposed to regular bleach. My stepdaughter surprised me by cleaning the house and doing all of our laundry one day. The last load (of colored clothes) had bleach spilled on them! So, I try not to keep it around. Even though a whole load of my son's and my clothes was ruined, I couldn't be upset with her because of all the work she did that day!

I sometimes use RIT dye whitener brightener. It usually whitens clothes up pretty well, but I don't know how it would work with well water.

The place we lived when I was small had well water. I am not sure of amounts but I remember my mom putting a small scoop of calgon water softener in the water along with the detergent.
Also we had a big wash tub out the back that we would catch rain water in. If it was full she would use water from there, but that wouldn't work too well with the automatic washers everyone has now. Ours had to be pulled into the kithchen and filled with a hose attached to the sink.
I remember using water softener when we had well water too. It did seem to help some.
I marked down water softner, and BIZ on my shopping list....hope that helps, we had that Oxi-Clean stuff from TV, my BIL bought it and he hated it, so he gave it to us...its alright for some things, but it didn't work on the whites......

I have that oxi stuff from tv too and I liked it worked well with laundry. I ran out and was at walmart and they are now selling it there I was very happy. I also use Bleach for socks and stuff and that works great too. Hope that helps :)

I know you already found your answer but maybe this will help too or someone else... I use Shacklee nature bright. It will even get poopy stained cloth diapers that have been washed and dried and washed and dried white again. I soaked the diapers in hot water with the nature bright over night. Then washed them in hot water the next day.

You can only buy it from Shacklee consultants. I believe there are some consultants who advertise on the web. You might try doing a search on it. Or you might try looking it up in your local yellow pages. sometimes consultants will have their own listings.

I've used dishwasher detergent and boiling water to get some of my whites, white again. If anyone wants more instructions for this, let me know.

This sounds gross, but my grandma says to wash your whites in white vinegar and then hand them out on the line all day. She says they turn whiter than you would believe. I have been going to try it.
My sister has done it and she swears by it too.
Its cheap to try it.
Just for kicks- fill a clear glass with your water, add some bleach to it, and stir it for a minute or two. Anything interesting happen?
