It kind of depends for us. Ds #1 watches a couple 1/2 hour shows when he gets up in the morning and then sometimes a movie in the afternoon or evening. It's hard in the winter because it has been SO cold and hard to get out to even play. Dh and I don't watch a whole lot - sometimes the tv is on and no one is even watching it, which dh likes, but I would rather just have it off. There are days when it feels like ds watches a lot of tv, but sometimes he is playing at the same time so I don't worry about it too much.

We don't have cable (we got rid of it 2 years ago) and none of us miss it. Ds will watch a video, but usually not all the way through (he has ants in his pants and can't sit still that long!). Ds works a lot and I'd rather be here than in front of the t.v.! ;)
Well, I better go get ready for my day...I'm running very late because of this board!!! (Very little make-up for me today! LOL!)
I really don't sweat it. If they were only watching tv and not playing outside or with friends, then I would worry. Same with Nintendo.

Mickey - We got rid of cable almost 4 years ago. I guess we have "basic cable" which gives us a total of about ten channels to choose from. I think not having a lot helps keep the kids away from it a little more and we tend to do other things. I also would rather be on here than in front of the tv, so I don't mind. When we had all of the channels it seemed like there was never anything on anyway! :) Dh misses ESPN.
we have satalite here, we live so far out in the country....we don't really watch alot, but I wonder sometimes about not wathching it at all....LOL...sounds like I am normal....Fianlly about something....

I had "cable withdrawal" for a few days when we first got home from visiting my family over Christmas! I LOVE Trauma: Life in the ER and sat there with my mouth hanging open into the wee hours of New Years Day watching the "Traumathon"! LOL! We don't even have basic...we have rabbit ears and I keep trying to get dh to stand there holding them during Survivor so I can get better reception, but he won't do it. ;) LOL!
Too much! Lol But... They do get out and play if it's nice, and more now that spring is coming soon. DS still gets his reading quota done and his math facts practiced, so I guess that's good. When I have early morning shifts I don't get much tv myself at all, because I have to go to bed early-- same time as the kids, if not sooner. Another thing that helps is that the computer is our entertainment center: stereo, movie player, tv, information resource center, game machine, and office tool. So if I'm talking to all of you dk can't watch tv 'cause my head's in the way, lol!

I suppose our kids do watch too much tv at times, especially the younger ones. We have satellite because we can't bring anything in with an outside antenna let a lone rabbit ears.
We have locked out Cartoon Network and have strict limits on the kind of shows the kids can watch. It's been so cold lately so they haven't had a lot else to do. Usually they watch PBSkids- a station that has Barney, Dragon Tales, Caillou, etc 24 hrs. a day.
The older kids that are in school get much less tv. They are allowed an hour of free time after school for a snack, tv or whatever. At 4;30 is homework time. After supper they have to straighten rooms, take baths, another study time to check over their work or read a book and then bed snack and bed time. Dh and I have the tv on, but if whoever is on the computer usually doesn't pay a lot of attention to it.

I'm with ya on Cartoon Network, Linda! While visiting my mom, ds put it on and it didn't stay on long! I don't even like Fox Kids in the early afternoon. I love PBS. And I did like Nick Jr. when we had cable.
So how do you "lock out" a show? I would LOVE this! The cartoon channel scares me, though I do occasionally tape Scooby Doo or The Flintstones.
I think sometimes we should get rid of our Satelite too, but we live in the country too where we don't even get regular PBS even with the rabit ears....its horrible reception too.....the Cartoon Network does have some really yucky cartoons, like cow and chicken, and powerpuff girls....we only watch scooby and flitstones there, Boomerang, also a cartoon network owned show has all the old greats like huckleberry hound, snaggle puss, and yogi bear....even some great popeye marathons....

Our satellite is a direct tv. On the main menu it gives you choices of program guide, mailbox, lists & limits, etc. There are 5 lists: normal, A, B, C & parent approved. On the normal list we put in the channels we get. This is what we click through. List A we have the pay per view channels, list B is the movie channels that sometimes we get a free weekend of. List C has ALL the channels available, even if we don't get them ( it will just say, channel not available if we don't subscribe to it) Parent approved are all the channels we allow the kids to see. If a channel , such as Cartoon Network, is not put in the parent approved list, but say in our normal list-when flipping channels Cartoon network cannot be accessed unless we(dh or I) unlock it with our 4 digit code. Everytime you shut the satellite off it locks those channels out again. (You can pick and choose whatever channels you want in each list--this is just how we have ours set up)
I really like this system of monitoring the tv. :)
