View Full Version : When is school out?
I just read Kacee's post that there is only 3 1/2 weeks left? the kids aren't out of school here until June 22....just curious to when you all are out?
May 25, go back August 15..too short of a summer
We pulled ds out of school yesterday because of some behavior problems he was having that the school wasn't able to get a grip on. We will be homeschooling for the remainder of the summer and possibly next year. I think they go back around Aug 15th as well.
Pam, sorry to hear about your problems with the school.
What grade is ds in again? Is it just the teacher or the system in general?
School is out here on May 30. We have 20 more days after today. The countdown has begun. :butterfly

Last day here is June 19. I think they are back Sept 4th. I would prefer a longer school year with longer school days but more breaks during the day.

June 30th and back after labor day.
We are pulling ds out for his last week of school for our trip South. I guess that means his school ends around June 9 or something.
Linda I'm with you on the longer school sessions. Personally, I would prefer year round school with three and four week breaks spread out over the year rather than three months off in the summer.

Kids get out May 23rd, back August...17th or so. I wouldn't like year round school. I really looked forward to summer's off as a kid. You have to work year round after you get out of school so let them have some joy! It would also raise property taxes around here having to air condition the schools all summer long.

We get out June 1st and go back August 23rd. I can't wait to have the boys home and the lazy days of summer ahead.
It was part the school dropping the ball and part ds. He's only in K but it's his third year in school. He started out in the special ed program and then went to early intervention preschool. This is his first year without a full time aid. He was starting to get aggressive, and the teacher couldn't get him to do his work. (?) Since they'd gone through all of the academics like numbers, colors, letters I decided he wouldn't miss out on much with me working with him here at home. We hope to get a better handle on the behaviors as well.

June 8th is our last day (pretty typical), and we go back August 28th.

I always know when it's their last day of school because it's always on my Wedding Anniversary... June 8th. :) LOL

I would love to have year round school! I think it would be better for the kids too. I have a friend who was principal in NW Ark and they did year round school. I thought her schedule was to die for. Lots of long breaks at each quarter and the whole month of July off.
I can't believe everyone knows when they go back. Believe me, ladies, I love my job, but at this point in the year I'm ready to call it a year and right now don't even want to know when I go back.

Kids here get out middle of June and go back at the end of August. Being a Department of Defence school though, as long as they go through May 17, they don't have to start back if they move to the states.

DS was in a year round school in CA and they debated going to a modified almost year round school here in WA. It was cheaper which is mainly why they went to it in CA. I do think it was much better for DS at the younger ages (K-1). He went to school about 3 months then had 3-4 weeks off. The great one was from Thanksgiving until New Years. With all of our family out of state at the time it was great to plan trips over the holidays and not worry about missed school. A/C wasn't a factor since they run heat during the winter as well and that was a trade off. Some of the vacation time fell when heat would be needed just as school fell when A/C was needed. Plus the traditional schools held summer school and school maintenance that meant the building was running anyways during the summer. Just different people in it. Another thing his school did that was great was to split the class. half came in an hour early and the other half left an hour later. That meant one teacher for 10 or less kids for an hour a day. When you consider how little time is actually spent in the classroom that's alot of time!
My DS's last day is Wed., June 27 and he returns the day after Labour day!

Our kids get out May 18 and probably go back around Aug. 20.
I'd hate year round school! I think the kids need the down time. I think it would be very difficult for kids to be in baseball and other summer activities and still concentrate and get homework done. BTJMO! :)

Linda/NE, the year round school still has that down time. He went to school the same number of days a year as here in WA (give or take a day). The difference is that here every month he gets a day off for in-service training. There you had less of the single days and more of the longer vacations. Sports were a problem for the older kids. Football was still in the fall but you may have intermural games schedualed during their time off. For the younger kids it didn't make a difference at least for the kids I knew that were involved in sports year round. DS's baseball season ends before school lets out. Would it have been easier down in CA were he may have been on vacation for a couple of weeks during the season? BTW, what sport is exclusive to the traditional summer months? Down there he had a vacation during every one of the seasons. Sun or snow you had a vacation to participate in that sport. If the family liked skiiing they could go on a week when traditional students were in school. One really nice thing was that we could go to the children's museum and other places with exibits and catch all of the exhibits on a weekday throughout the year. Many of the families would take the opportunity to visit places like Disneyland when the crowds were smaller.
At least for the younger kids the shorter more frequent breaks were better. You could see those Kindergarteners reaching break point after 2-3 months of school. They'd get enough of a break to refresh but not enough to start getting board. In fact DS seemed to make learning jumps during his break. his teacher suggested that he was probably accumulating knowledge for a couple of months and during those couple of weeks on break he would stop getting new info and process what he had, bringing it all together. It was also easy to keep reading every day during a shorter break. I have a real problem keeping things together during 3 months. I keep thinking *Oh there's still another 2 months. We'll read more later. With just 3-4 weeks you keep on track. The teachers said they found the same thing for themselves. All of the planning work they would normally do just before school started they could break down into smaller more manageable blocks of work.

MM! We Homeschool year round. The public schools on the island are finished May 15, but the school system adninistered the standardized tests last week. So now that's over, no one sends their children back to school execpt if they need a daytime babysitter.(ACK) ßß!

Lynda/Wa,
They started a year round school in Kearney a few years back but still have most as traditional. I suppose it would be different if that's all the kids ever knew and if all the schools did the same. It's my understanding that the t-ball, pee wees, and other ball (which is strictly a spring/summer sport around here) went on as scheduled and those kids in the year round school that chose to participate in it, had to deal with schoolwork and game and practice. I guess that's not much different from basketball and such during the school year. Not to mention the swimming they would miss out on since it's only warm enough here for outside swimming late May thru Aug. I guess my thinking just comes from what I've known all my life. My own kids find it hard to concentrate on homework when they'd rather be outside enjoying the nice weather. I know it still figures out being the same amount of down time, but when we have the freezing cold weather and are cooped up in the house, my kids would rather be in school than on vacation (except for an occasional snow day! :) )
I personally hope they don't adopt it here. But then again, I find change difficult lately.
