View Full Version : Read any good books lately?
Since arriving in Alaska I have read about 8 books all within a 9 week time span due to pure boredom. When you are in temporary housing you can oly watch so much
TV before you go crazy! Now that I'm in my house and things are pretty much organized I can once again start reading. Especially since it's almost the end of season for TV shows.
So do you have any suggestions on books that are really great? Has anybody read any books by James Patterson? He wrote the book "Along Came a Spider" which is a movie that is out right now. To me the preview of the movie looked good and books are usually better than the movies made from them.

I love James Patterson! I have read almost everything by him. Kiss the Girls is excellent, as is Along Came a Spider. Right now I am reading Cradle and All by him. My favourites are the ones that feature detective Alex Cross (played by Morgan Freeman in the movies).
Let's see, what else have I read lately? House of sand and Fog (it was iffy), and just bought the entire Lord of the Rings set since mine is from high school and I want to re-read them before the trilogy movies start in December of this year.
What were the 8 books you read??

I just started We Were the Mulvaney's. I got it from the library a few weeks ago and had to renew it because I didn't even have a chance to get into it. I love to read and have missed it so much the past few months.
I'd also like to hear what books you recently read. I am always looking to add to my "List to Read" :)
Thanks KathyT for the info on James Patterson. I will have to go to the library and get some of his books.
For starters one of the books I read was the 4th book in the Harry Potter series. I carried that huge book in my backpack with me from North Carolina to California and then to Alaska. I finally found the time to finish it when we got here. I know a few of the gals here read it last summer. It took me that long to read it but it was worth it!
I read a few older Danielle Steel books and they were just that, Danielle Steel books. Almost all of them are along the same story lines just different characters. For me they are an easy read and they help pass time!
I did read Gap Creek by Robert Morgan. It was an Oprah bookclub book a while back. It was pretty good. Made me happy to be alive now and not way back when. Also made me think about how our grandparents and their parents must have lived.
I read Silent Night by Mary Higgins Clark and was a little disappointed. Quite a few people told me that her books were great. That one didn't seem to have very much action in it. I'm going to read another one that is longer and see what I think then. That one was a pretty short book.
Right now I'm reading Lone Eagle by Danielle Steel. It's her newest book. So far I'm really enjoying this one. It takes you back in time so it's not like alot of her newer ones.
How is We Were the Mulvaney's, KarlaB? It seems like it would be pretty good.

Hi Jen. I recently finished "At Home In Mitford" and the other 3 books in the series - Jan Karon is the author. It took me awhile to get into the first one, but loved them once I got going.
:)
Come to Me - Amy Bloom
Autobiography of a Face - Lucy Grealy
Sara's Laughter - Susan Engberg
Birds of America - Lorrie Moore
Expecting Adam - Martha Beck
The Hours - Michael Cunningham
Flesh and Blood - Michael Cunningham
All very different. Enjoyed them all! Amy
I have found a series of books by Robin Jones Gunn, they are christion fiction books. They have all kinds of messages to you, and they are easy reads! She has an adult series that is so great. Try reading Echoes or Waterfalls.

I finished reading The Lost Boy by Dave Peltzer about a month ago. I thought that it was good. I started reading A Man Named Dave, but I never got to finish it. I guess I will read it on the plane. LOL!!!

Those are good books!!! Parts were very hard for me to read though if I let myself actually think about all that he endured. :(

Yeah, as I was reading,I would tell dh some of the stuff, and we both agreed that we could not believe people would actually treat a child that way. It really got to me too.
I tend to gravitate toward medical/legal mysteries, so I like Patricia Cornwall, James Patterson, Turrow.
I used to be an avid reader, knocking out about a book a week, but one of the things that has happened since I quit smoking is that I have found my attention span is NIL..I can barely read a magazine anymore. :(

I posted to this yesterday and it never showed up...??
Anyway, I have barely gotten into the Mulvaney's, but I like it so far. I have heard it is really sad.
I also read Gap Creek. My goal is to get thru the books on Oprah's book club list. I have been slacking lately.
How many have you read on the Oprah list so far? I have read some and have had some mixed feeling about how great the books actually were. Some were good, some ok and some I didn't really like. I borrowed 3 books from a friend last week and they are all Oprah books. I'll have to let you know if I like them or not.

I just went to get my list and I can't find it! :tearhair: I remember moving it and can't remember where I put it! Aargh! Anyway, I'd say about ten? Some I didn't really like either and a few I quit when I couldn't get into them. Which ones did your friend give you? I'd love to hear what you think of them! :)

Hi I just wanted to join in on the book discussion since I love a good book, too! One of my favorite repeat reads is A Razors Edge by Somerset Maugham. I have also read some of Oprah's reading list and really haven't found one I really liked. Right now I'm reading The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan and like it so far. Anyways-this looks like fun and friendly boards to post on and if I ever learn to type fast enough I may even venture into the chat room one day!
