1st Grade Teachers - What do you expect

Ok - First Grade Teachers - when you have a child that is entering 1st grade. what skills do you expect them to have vs. a child entering Kindergarten. We are thinking of having our ds skip K and go right to 1st grade - I am wondering what you expect a child to know how to do that is coming into your class.

    Thanks in advance
    Mary

Not a teacher, but here is a link to our district's elementary guidelines. I am sure your district has something similiar. Can you set up a conference with the principal and a 1st grade teacher at the school your child will go to and talk and ask your questions??

Is there a specific reason why you don't want to send him for Kindergarten?

    Yes

It is only 2.5 hours a day and I feel he won't be challenged enough because he already can do everything that his friends that are going into 1st grade and he needs a full day school

Gosh, that is a short K day. Our preschoolers go longer hours that that.
I would wonder if he has the maturity to be with the kids a year older than him. Or, depending on birthdays, would some be 2 yrs older than he? My brain figure that today.
    Good luck with your decision!

Our Kind here is only 2.75 hrs/day. I know the teacher hates it because they have so much to get in and so little time, but I'd hate for my ds to be there all day - just think they're only little once and they have the next 12 yrs to be at school all day.
