    Sweet potatoes

There are so many ways to make sweet potatoes... how do you make yours?

We boil, mash, add milk, butter, salt, brown sugar, spread 'em in a casserole dish and top with marshmallows. If I tried it any other way my family would be shocked and dismayed and would probably be locked out of the house!

What other dishes are must-haves in your family?

I bake mine then mash them with half and half, butter and cinnamon.

Must haves for thanksgiving? for my kids mashed potatoes, for my dh his mother's dressing.

Brichard hates marshmellows in his sweet potatoes! We have always mashed they the same way Ann does but this year I'm doing a casserole with a pecan topping.

I guess the most unordinary thing my mom always makes is a lemon jello with fruit ****tail in it topped with whipped topping. We rarely eat, or just a tiny bit, but one year it wasn't on the table we all flipped!! lol

Another thing is that we have never had a boxed stuffing mix. The first time I went for a Thanksgiving meal at someone else's house I thought the boxed stuff was disgusting!

We always turn the leftover turkey into turkey chowder. We usually have all the chowder fixings ready and immediately prepare the chowder after lunch to eat for dinner.

I don't like sweet potatoes, but I think my mom leaves them whole in a casserole dish, adds something to them??? LOL and tops with marshmallows.

We've never had boxed stuffing either.

A must have for me is pecan AND pumpkin pies for dessert. LOL!

When we eat sweet potatoes I make them just like mashed potatoes, but with less milk. But for Thanksgiving, I use canned yams-sliced, dotted with butter, and sprinkled with brown sugar. The girls and I love them---dh and his kids won't touch them.

My stuffing is my favorite part of the dinner. It's a totally basic thyme/onion/celery/bread stuffing, but it's my mom's recipe, and it definitely makes dinner taste (and smell) right.

I love sweet potatoes. Last time (second time) I made them they were stringy though, not sure why. Italian salad dressing, onions, butter, salt and pepper went in the first batch I made and loved it. My mom usually put in butter and that was it. Dh's family don't make/eat them and when I did put them out nobody ate them, found out later it was because they didn't know what it was. rofl Guess mil never made them either.
Stuffing on dh's side was always different than what we were used to. It was a drier stuffing and my mom and dad always had theirs more moist and added potatoes and stuffed the bird. Dh's family is afraid of it not cooking so never put it in the bird. My parents and I make very good gravy and mil's and sil's were always runny and not as much flavour. Funny how one turkey dinner can be so different depending on where you are. Am making it myself this year on Christmas day so it'll be my way.

Vea, my sweet potato pie doesn't have marshmellows on it. Think pumpkin but with sweet potatoes. Lots of people make a hot side dish with sweet potatoes and then topped with marshmellows and browned in the oven.

That's the way I make it, not in a pie. The more marshmallows the better!

We often make them like all the mashed/marshmellow ways mentioned, but dks prefer them just cut into disks, and baked with a little butter and garlic salt and topped with bread crumbs.

Wouldn't marshmallows make it a desert? lol Never had it, or the pie.
I did see a recipe for french fries from sweet potatoes. Not sure where it went but had some spices on it that looked good. Vea, I've never had one baked but will have to try it.
