? about honor roll

All this talk about report cards has got me wondering. How does your school decide on honor roll? Does citizenship, and electives (ie, PE, Music, Art) play a part in the decision?

Honor Roll has been a debate at our school as long as I have been working there. The A honor roll of course is straight A's, but the A/B honor roll is not only A's and B's it just means that you have a grade point average between 3.5-3.9 or 18-23 quality points. You could have an F on your report card, but as long as you have a grade point average or quality points that falls into that range, you make honor roll. Also in order to make any honor roll, you have to have an S or better in music, art, and PE. (These grades are usually based on behavior), but you can not keep a child off the honor roll for his citizenship grade. I guess until now, I have never really thought about how I feel about it, I just went with the flow, and did the grades and reported who was or wasn't on the honor roll.

So, how does your school determine honor roll, and do you have any strong feelings on it?

our is all grades and conduct. either all A's and E's or A/B and E's in all glasses.

We have two different honor rolls, in Jr. High/ High School Gold turns to Prinicpal Honor roll, and Silver is Honor roll.

Silver Honor roll, all A's and B's and nothing under Outstanding in effort.

Gold Honor roll, all A's and nothing under Outstanding in effort.

I have no first-hand experience with this (being a home schooler I don't know what our public schools do), but I would think honor roll would be what Ann and Renee described. Your honor roll sounds extremely lenient, Leigh. I'm all for encouraging kids, but I don't think it should be a feel good thing if you don't really earn it.

Here, they only get grades for their classes, not citizenship grades. The honor rolls is based upon the grade you receive in regular classes, not "specials" (PE, music, art, things like that) for the 4th and 5th graders. For the 6th-8th graders, all classes count towards your GPA.

There are 4 different ones, Gold (4.0 GPA), Silver (3.5-3.9 GPA), Bronze (3.0-3.49) and Blue (Improved GPA .5).

That is what the teachers here think, but we can't make whoever is in charge see that. Why is it called the A/B honor roll if you can have an F on your report card?

I meant to add that we have BUG (bringing up grades) if you improve your quality points by 2.

My dd's elementary school doesn't have honor rolls. I have never even heard of them in elementary schools. Growing up, they didn't start til middle school. I'm assuming that will be the case here when dd starts middle school this upcoming school year.

I can't imagine someone making an honor roll if they received an F in a class. I have a friend that teaches elementary school in Florida. She was telling me other things that are allowed in that state that would never be allowed here. It surprises me that states can vary so widely with their school rules/guidelines.

All the schools have an awards "ceremony" on the last day of school, not a banquet... I don't know why I used that word, lol!

I forgot to mention that the honor rolls are only 3rd and 4th graders in Elementary school. All the classes have most improved and citizenship awards though.

O stands for Outstanding.

Our system has a special ceremony for all the straight A students.

I don't think our elementary school has an honor roll. If they do I don't know about it. That use to not start until the Jr. High. (I'm going to have to ask someone... LOL )

When ds was in k-2, they used to have an awards ceremony for the whole school, all grades. A boy and girl in each grade were named outstanding in each academic and special, plus and overall oustanding in each grade. These weren't necessarily academic awards, but effort/improvement/attitude ect.
They had been doing this for years at this school.
When the class behind ds hit 1st grade, there were massive complaints that by singleling out a few, it was damaging to the self esteem of all the other little darlings. This class also complained about weekly conduct grades too!
It was stopped. After that, at the end of the year, all the 'awards' type stuff was done in each individual classroom and every single child got some kind of "character certificate". BUT if they got any other awards (like good grades, art awards ect) those were put into an envelope, so that it wouldn't make the other parents..opps, i meant children feel badly.
Only in 5th grade did actual individual honors get acknoweledged..guess we didn't care about self esteem by then, time to toughen 'em up for the higher grades! LOL
