    I couldn't imagine sending any of my kids off with total strangers at that age either.

    Mine haven't yet. Heck, I never did when I was a kid!! That's not a really huge thing around here. There are some boy scout and girl scout camps...and I know that our church has a mission trip that the 8th/9th graders can attend.

    I don't work in the summers...so I like to have my dks home with me.

    I went to camp and LOVED it. I went for a week in 3rd and 4th grades, and 2 weeks through 7th grade. It was girl Scout camp--very rustic!!!!!
    Dds all went for a shorter time.....but only dd1 liked it. (those pampered princesses!!!)

    DC sounds pretty cool- especially for a 17 year old.

    When I was young, I went to Girl Scout camps, but that was with the leaders that my mom knew... not total strangers. Heck, I even went to the Girl Scout cabana in Mexico when I was that age, but again, it was with my GS leaders that my parents knew.
