Hello all. I am a mom to a 1-year old (he turned 1 on June 3rd) and am looking for ideas for things to do with him. We are in 2 playgroups and we do the usual park/playground routine when weather is nice but what about at home? In morning for instance, after breakfast, i'd like to be able to do something that will hold his interest for a while. He has toys but sometimes I think there's not enough stimulation. Or am I thinking ahead of myself? Anyone with same age child/children who could offer advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello Wolfie! (may I call you wolfie???)

There's a great book. Basic Montessori for under fives that talks about setting up your home environment to stimulate your child. The basic theory of Montessori is that the child is constantly learning (absorbing) and that if the environment is prepared in such a way, they can learn, discover, and be stimulated while becoming self motivated. This is of course a nut shell, there's much more to it than that. I'm sure there are some teachers on this board that could give you much more insight on the method if you are interested.

The book has lots of activities for the child that you would never think of, and it explains the whys and wherefores developmentally. It is wonderful for the child, and wonderful for you because the child is busy and content, but you are not constantly having to "entertain" your child.

My youngest ds just turned one. I have one cupboard in the kitchen that is for him. I put different things in it all the time. Usually just different household stuff, sometimes toys. He's starting to use the chunky crayons with lots of supervision. He loves the wooden train system, he'll play with that for quite a while and is already hooking the pieces together by himself. He loves reading books and singing the songs with hand motions. Are those the types of things you were looking for? Hope you can find something helpful. Welcome to the board.
