    Split Pea Soup

    Does anyone have a good recipe for split pea soup? I bought some split peas the other day wanting some soup with a ham taste. Does anyone have a recipe that would fit this description? Thanks!!!

    This is the one I always use and it's delicious. It uses a lot of ingredients than most... but the end results are worth it.

    SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM

    1 lb. pkg. dried green split peas (use 1/2 yellow & green peas)
    1 lb. piece baked ham or meaty ham bone
    8 c. water
    2 med. onions, finely chopped & 1 onion, peeled & studded with 2 whole cloves
    1 tsp. marjoram
    1/2 tsp. thyme
    1 1/2 c. chopped carrots
    3 celery ribs, chopped
    1/4 c. minced parsley
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. pepper

    Preparation time: 10 minutes. Cook 1 3/4 hours. Serves 8. Serve with black bread spread with butter.

    In large stock pot or soup kettle, combine dry peas, ham and water. Heat to boiling over high heat and skim off any residue that rises to the surface.

    Add chopped onions and whole onion studded with cloves, marjoram and thyme. Heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low. Simmer, covered 1 hour.

    Add carrots, celery, parsley, salt and pepper. Cook, covered, over medium low heat, until peas are very tender, about 30 minutes. Remove whole onion and ham from soup. Discard onion. Cut ham into bite-size pieces; discard any bone. Return ham to pot.

    found this online

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 2 cups dried split peas
    * 6 cups cold water
    * 1 meaty ham bone
    * 1/4 pound Salt pork, cut in 1/2-inch pieces
    * 10 cups water
    * 1 cup diced onions
    * 1 cup celery leaves and stalks, chopped

    PREPARATION:
    Soak the peas overnight in the 6 cups of cold water. Drain and put in a heavy soup kettle with the ham bone, salt pork and 10 cups of water. Cover and simmer 2 hours, then add the onions and celery.

    Simmer about 1 hour longer, adding another cup of water if soup dries out too much. Remove ham from bone and dice. If desired, remove the salt pork. Put the soup through a strainer, blender or food processor. Blend with ham or add ham back into soup after blending. I like to blend or mash part of my pea soup and leave some texture. If the soup not thick enough, add 1/2 cup of light cream.

    I made a version of this recipe.. I used 3 cans chicken broth, half pound split peas, and a slice of ham bone in. I also added some parsley, basil, and garlic salt. The noodles I threw in at the last minute so that ds would have something to eat. I left the soup really soupy.
