I'm an afterschool teacher as well(these kids rock don't they?)
This summer is my first in this room fulltime. It has been great. What we have been doing, and I really took this lead from the kids, is doing a world tour. Each week we spend time in anothe country getting to know the people and places there. We talk about foods, transportation, spoken and written language, I check out books on the subject, and we do arts and crafts from that country. The biggest hits are the games I find that children from each country play. Our first we we went to Africa and I found a game called Mancala. They sell it at a local game store so I picked up two games. We STILL play Mancala, and we did Africa 5 weeks ago! Tomorrow we start on Brazil(my boss's daughter is going on a Mission trip there) and I have found some cool games and things to do.

We also did a pajama day where we all wore our pajamas, brought movies, sleeping bags, tents, and just chilled for the day.

2 weeks ago we did a health and safety week. They rescue squad, fire department and police department came for talks and showed us how to do CPR and 1st aid.

We will be going camping next week. Again we'll have tents, sleeping bags, marshmellows, and do arts and crafts associated with camping.

I have learned that ANY science activity is a great hit with the boys.

We make friendship bracelets, and check this out! I crochet al ot on my break and one day one of the boys asked if he could do it...now my whole class can crochet a chain, and most can do single crochets!

We made aboriginal dreamings when we visited Australia.

I could go on and on really.

BTW, we have nearly eliminated the thought that there are girl things and boy things. it has taken all summer but I think I have broken them of the gender sterotypes. Boys now crochet, girls shoot bows and arrows, etc....

    HTH and good luck.

Childcare Centers > afterschool age summer program

In 1975, ECDC originally started as Parents of Preschoolers, Inc. (POPI), a parent corporation on the NIH campus in Building 35. As the need for before and after school care for children in grades 1 through 6 became critical for working families, in 1976, an after school program was established to accommodate 20 children at the Arylawn Elementary School on Oakmont Avenue, one block west of the NIH campus. Within the next 5 years, additional after school programs and a preschool program were established to provide child care services for 100 children and NIH families.
