Anyone have any experience with warts?

Oldest ds has warts on his pointer fingers. We tried compound W and it seemed to work, but then they came back. We took him to the dr and he put something on them, but didn't want to do liquid nitrogen because he said it can be painful for kids and can permanently damage the fingernail bed. He told us to keep applying the Compound W and to keep his fingers taped. Again, this seemed to work and then they came back. I tried just leaving them alone, but they seemed to spread. Now we are trying some pads that you cut to fit and then stick on for 48 hrs. The pharmacist said they are more powerful. If they don't work I think we are back to the dr. Anyone else ever have this battle and what did you do? I have heard they typically will go away within a few years? but I don't want them to get out of control. My bil has warts ALL over his hands and feet - to the point that he is embarrassed by them yet he doesn't do anything about them. I don't want ds to get to that point. Anyone have any info???? PLEASE!!

I guess I wouldn't wait either... I had this problem too and it is VERY embarrasing. (and they DO spread) He may end up having to go in and having them burned off... and that will usually take care of the problem. Good luck...

I know someone that had a warts right at the end of their fingernail beds. The doctor tried to burn them off , but that didn't work. Finally he perscribed a drug that is known to help STD warts. It is supposed to be very powerful, and it helped this person even though they didn't have the STD kind of warts. The only drawback is that it is very expensive. If nothing else works though it might be worth a try and it is painless.

Oldest dd (9) had been battling plantar warts on her foot since November. She got them from our aquatic centre where she swims. We tried compound W, soluver, those bandaid things, etc and nothing worked. So tomorrow is our third and final trip to the dr to have them frozen off with nitro???. The first time it didn't hurt at all, the second time it did but she was ok, and this time should be the same as the second. No experience on the fingers though, but I wouldn't let them get out of hand, even though apparently the body will eventually fight them off itself by building up enough of an immunity.

Kathy - I have heard that, too, about the body eventually building up an immunity, but like you said they could still spread and I don't want to wait. Ds has started pointing with his middle fingers and I don't want it to be something that is embarrassing for him.

Leigh - Ds has one wart at the end of his fingernail bed and some that seem to be formed from right under the tip of his fingernail. From the sites I checked out a while back they said these are the hardest to get rid of. If this doesn't work for us I will ask our dr about the prescription - I wonder if it's something they would be able to give to a kid?

Karla, I was telling my friend about your post, and asked her if she could give me the name of the medicine. It is Aldara Imiquimod. It worked for her, and they still aren't back. It has been about 1 month. Hope this helps.

BTW I don't see why they wouldn't give it to a kid if it works.

Dh asked our dr the warts again yesterday and he said if the treatment we are trying right now doesn't work to do nothing for about a week and then bring him in. He said some of the procedures can cause scarring, but at this point I'd rather have that than this constant battle. And, on his fingertips how bad/noticeable would the scarring be? Anyway, THANKS AGAIN for the info!!!!!

Our doctor had him use over the counter wart medicine and then soak it in vinegar each night and as the wart gets crumbly to cut it or scrape it out. Dh said the vinegar help more than the medicine. It dried it up very well. Now they are all gone.

Our doctor prescribed liquic Tagamet (or was it Zantac??) for our ds when he was 3. It was one of the things that they found it helped. I wasn't faithful enough in giving it to him to know if it did help, but they did go away on their own. Our 3yo dd has them now and we're just soaking and scrubbing the dead stuff off and applying clear fingernail polish to keep the air from getting to them. That's supposed to help. Good luck!

Mandy and Pam - Thanks for the info! I have never heard of using vinegar or nail polish, but I am willing to pretty much try anything and love getting new ideas because so far nothing has kept them away.

Would your doctor let you try the Aldara stuff? I was just wondering if it worked. I have also heard of rubbing them with potatoes orI think it was mashed bananas. I know the potatoes ois right. I will try to get back to you on the banana thing.

Thanks Leigh! I haven't talked to our dr yet. He told us to continue what we are doing and then if it doesn't work to take a week off from everything and then bring him in. Interesting about the potatoes and/or bananas! Makes one wonder how people ever figured some of these remedies out!
